Your questions
Frequently asked questions
What is an electrical installation?
An electrical installation is the complete fixed wiring system in a building: the consumer unit, cables, circuits, sockets, switches and lighting, plus fixed equipment such as alarms or EV chargers. In homes it ranges from a single new circuit to a full rewire. In commercial premises it also covers distribution boards, three phase supplies and emergency lighting.
How much does an electrical installation cost in the UK?
It depends on the size of the job. As a guide, a consumer unit replacement starts from £450, a full 3 bed rewire is typically £3,500 to £6,000, extension first fix is £600 to £1,200 and a 4 bed new build installation starts from £8,000. See our pricing section. Every DLB quote is fixed and written after a free survey.
What is BS 7671?
BS 7671 is the British Standard for electrical installations, also known as the IET Wiring Regulations (currently the 18th Edition). Every new electrical installation in the UK must be designed, installed and tested to comply with it.
Do I need Part P for my electrical installation?
Yes, if the work is notifiable. Part P of the Building Regulations covers electrical work in homes in England and Wales, including new circuits, consumer unit replacements and work in bathrooms. As a Part P registered contractor, DLB certifies the work and notifies building control for you, so you receive your Building Regulations compliance certificate with no extra paperwork.
How long does a full house rewire take?
A typical three bedroom house rewire takes 5 to 10 working days, depending on the size of the property, access and whether you are living there during the works. We give you a clear timeline with your quote.
What is the difference between an EICR and an installation certificate?
An Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) is issued when new electrical work is installed, confirming it was designed, installed and tested to BS 7671. An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is a periodic inspection of an existing installation to check it is still safe. Find out more about our EICR inspections.
